I’ve taken a long vacation from this blog (About 2 months). I used to do this quite often when my topic was about my student teaching experience. After that was over I was again left without something to “blog” about. In that time period a lot has happened. At the end of April I graduated from OC with a Bachelors degree in Social Studies Education, went to the Dallas Comic Convention, and this past weekend attended my older sisters wedding.
I didn’t waste my time completely…let’s see during my “vacation” from my blog I did a lot of film viewing and book reading. It has been weird, before graduation I was always extremely busy. School during the day and work at night, writing was a job done whenever I had the energy. The following things have made me think about the amount of time I spend writing: I work only 40 hours at Barnes and Noble, Single with no kids, I live alone, and it’s summer. I should of finished my screenplay and begun writing my “saga” right? Well no. I have worked on my screenplay between watching Anime and reading. I have read some good books and graphic novels. Unfortunately, starting now the subject of this blog will not be about my excuses but something less entertaining! (That’s a joke, please stay with me!)
A few weeks ago one of my Managers handed me an advanced reader copy of Daniel H. Wilsons first novel. She said, “Jefferson I think you will like this!” (Good job Jessica!). I will state that this book got me HYPE! It was the best thing I’ve read in a while. Quite the page-turner and one of the pros of working at a bookstore (New NOOK coming JUNE 10!). The name of the book was “Robopocalypse” and it will be available in your nearest bookstore June 7, 2011 (A week from today). If you haven’t noticed I love robots more than you realize (TRANSFORMERS DARK OF THE MOON!!!) Some people like Zombies, Vampires, Werewolves, and Witches/Wizards. Me I will read or watch anything about robots. Recently bookstores and theatres have been plagued with stories about the end of the world. You well know what’s on the forecast of certain doom May 21 “The Rapture” (Didn’t happen surprising?) and December 21, 2012 the end of the Mayan calendar and when the world will end. Other apocalyptic stories have involved Zombies, Viruses, Wars, and horrible weather. Enter the robots, Wilson’s book is set in the not too distant future where robots of all kinds have taken over and just about killed off all of humanity. In his gripping tale the toys, planes, cars, domestic robots, military robots, and companion robots have gone “ham” (see urban dictionary) on humanity. I dare not reveal too much about this book but trust me it is good. Even though I have the advanced reader copy I’m supporting Daniel Wilson by purchasing his book next Tuesday. It’s his first novel. More so, Steven Spielberg has stepped up and will direct the film adaptation to be released in theatres 2013.
I’m really excited about this book, I feel that I’m in on the production for the movie as well because I have already read it and know about it before it will even make the bestseller list and I’m sure it will. I loved the descriptions Wilson placed in his thrilling story. He’s an incredible writer and I hope he keeps writing.
The fact that this book will become a movie in 2013 is special to me because it is the “syncing” of two of my favorite things: writing and filmmaking. If anything you should be able to see Wilson’s writing prowess because it is Spielberg that wants to direct the film adaptation. SPIELBERG. If you’re a writer and your story is so good that a well-known director wants to make a movie out of it then you’re doing something to be praised.
Take Michael Crichton, he is one of my favorite writers unfortunately he passed some years ago. After reading Robopocalypse, I decided to read another book that Spielberg directed as a film. This past weekend while flying to Ohio for my sisters wedding I purchased Jurassic Park (A really nice hardcover from B&N), while on the plane and waiting between flights I finished the book in two days. I really loved the book if you remember from the movie Ian Malcolm was portrayed by Jeff Goldblum. In Crichton’s book Malcolm was my favorite character. Chaos theory is really intriguing and in the book you get a lot more of the details that were left out from the book. What I love about Crichton is that he makes the unbelievable, real. I’m reading “The Lost World” now.
In 1993, I was five years old and my parents took me to see Jurassic Park. When the T-Rex attacked the kids when they were in the jeep I can clearly remember losing it in the theatre my dad had to take me out because I was screaming and crying at the top of my lungs. Spielberg you’re an awesome filmmaker for that!
Spielberg is one of those inspiring Hollywood Icons. Spielberg has directed and produced a myriad of movies. E.T, Jaws, The Color Purple (“You SHOWL IS UGGLY!”-Shug Avery), and he has headed production of Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, ER, Disturbia, and my all time favorite TRANSFORMERS!!!! Spielberg is a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood. He’s inspiring.
I have one degree it’s in education. There is so much that I want to do. Eventually I want to head to film school. No idea when, but hopefully in a few years. In the meantime I will focus on writing and lord willing do something worth reading about. If you don’t like Spielberg I’m sorry for you and if you don’t like Transformers I’m really sorry for you. If anything I want to write stories that take the reader to another place where they can learn a lesson they can apply to their own life, in order to make themselves better on this race of life.
Robots are awesome, Robopocalypse is even better but, don’t take my word for it read it for yourself when it hits bookstores June 7, 2011!!
Here is a quote, “Paper has more patience `then people”-Anne Frank. Anne Frank is in our history books because she wrote. Often I an aspiring writer feel that I have to cater to some “invisible audience” but in reality I don’t. I don’t have to let people read what I write and if I want to take a vacation from my blog it is something I can do. Writing is a job that I enjoy and the rewards are my own. Creating a story, breathing into it the “breaths of life” by way of the characters I create is something I enjoy. I know what I write will be patient with me. The truth is no one is going to force me to write. If I want to write I have to push and encourage myself. In this day and age I have accepted that and know that the “world” is mine for the taking? Well, we will have to see. In the meantime I will continue to work on my screenplay, plan (I mean WRITE) my “saga”, read as many graphic novels as possible, read other works of Science Fiction, Fantasy, or Fiction, and above all be myself. Take care, comrade take care.
