“This little light of mine I’m gone let it shine.”-Lil Wayne. In Kanye West’s “All of the Lights” remix Lil Wayne alluded to the gospel Children’s song: “This Little Light Mine” written by Harry Dixon Loes. The scriptural foundation for this song comes from a couple of scriptures one being Matthew 5:16, “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your fine works and give glory to your father who is in heaven”.
I can remember singing that song as a young boy attending Vacation Bible School. It is one of my favorites. One of the important aspects of being a member of Christ’ church is that every member has a “spiritual gift package”. That can range from preaching, teaching, singing, encouraging, and even leadership (I listed some of the typical ones). All members use their spiritual gifts for the edification and “Up-building” of the Church. I know what I’ve been taught and that is to use my gifts for good.
I’m into rap music (Weird Placement I know). I like Lil Wayne, Biggie, Jay-Z, Drake, Lupe Fiasco, J. Cole, Kanye West, Eminem, and several others. (Go ahead and judge me!) The way they use words to get their point across is pretty unique. It’s their gift.
If you can tune out the swear words you should listen to All of the Lights (Remix). When I first heard it I listened to Lil Wayne’s verse and I was like: “Dang that’s tight!” when he said “This little light of mine, I’m a let it shine”. He was saying that he is going to brighten the world with his “rapping” prowess also the song is called: “All of the LIGHTS”. It pays well for him. He’s doing his thing. I respect that.
People often ask me why I have the word “woRm” tattooed on the back of my right arm. The surface or scripted answer I give is that it’s an acronym for W-riting, O-riginal, (R)are,(R)edeemed, and (R)evolutionary M-an. There are three spikes that come out of the “R” because it stands for three words beginning with the letter R. I am also the, “III” (3rd). I’ve said this before, I really got into writing about four years ago. The point I’m trying to “prick” you with is this: Whatever you do, whatever gift you have, use it for something positive. I’m not trying to preach! Seriously hear me out or read me out…If we can all figure out what we do well we can work towards a kind of “Heaven on Earth”. Unfortunately we live in a world where a great chasm separates those who do “good or positive” things and those that do “evil or negative” things. It’s kind of like X-men. In that world mutants (Homo Superior) all have these special abilities from their mutation. Some opt to do good things, we call them the X-men and others opt to do evil things, we call them the Brotherhood…(Of Evil Mutants).
Not many want to admit it but in this world and in this day it’s truly a struggle between good and evil. A struggle that pits the truth against lies, light against dark, and so forth, if you’re reading this you know what you do well-you know your talent(s). We are an “untoward” generation. Some of us use our skills and knowledge for good reasons while others use their skill and knowledge for bad reasons. In Star Wars Episode III Obi-Wan Kenobi said: “Only a Sith deals in absolutes”. Anakin is lost and confused and just told Kenobi that from his point of view the Jedi are evil. That is interesting to me. I believe there are “absolutes”. (That will be the subject of a later blog). That does not make me evil or bad, it just makes me I’ll use the word, “sanctified”. As a writer I want to use my gifts in a positive manner. Like Lil Wayne said, I want this little light of mine to shine, I desire a world where all of our lights: ALL OF THE LIGHTS shine like the stars sprinkled throughout the Universe. So with my talents, my lights, I’m going to let them shine: ALL OF THE LIGHTS!
Here is a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr: “Over the past few years I have consistently preached that nonviolence demands that the means we use must be as pure as the ends we seek. I have tried to make clear that it is wrong to use immoral means to attain moral ends. But now I must affirm it is just as wrong, or perhaps even more so, to use moral means to preserve immoral ends”. That was taken from King’s Letter from Birmingham Jail. That letter is elegant. I love it. More so I like the ethics King presents the reader. What are your motives? Why do you do the things you do? Are they “moral”. Is there something sinister swimming under your placid current of “good will”. Something to sleep on take care reader and press on…press on.
