Yesterday I caught a matinee showing of X-Men First Class for a very convenient price of $3.75 Kudos to Tinsletown. I am more than a huge fan of the X-men, and have loved them since I was a youngster. The movie was good it would have been even better if Professor Charles Xavier had erased my entire knowledge of the X-men before I went to see it.
I loved the opening to the movie. (Oh I guess this is when I should mention possible ***SPOILER ALERT*** but not too much…)
Charles and Erik were featured in the opening scenes along with a young Mystique. From the very beginning I understood that the people who make the X-Men movies must have an X-men encyclopedia that they just pick characters from and construct a movie with. I’m not a continuity Nazi, but they need to at least watch the movies that have already put out. If this were some reboot then it may not be such a big deal but since they featured footage from the original trilogy in their trailers I feel that it is my duty to highlight some of their errors…
I thought the fact that the “prequel” was set in the 1960’s was great. My lists of grievances are as follows:
1) Havok: The problem with him being in the first class was that in the comic books he wasn’t. Alex Summers is the brother of Scott Summers. Scott Summers was in the original First class along with Jean Grey (Marvel Girl), Bobby Drake (Iceman), Hank McCoy (Beast) and Warren Worthington (Angel). The other issue was that in X-Men Origins: Wolverine both Scott Summers and Emma Frost were both teenagers being held by William Stryker. Which brings me to grievance number 2
2) Emma Frost: She was a teenager being rescued by Professor X/Wolverine in Wolverine Origins but appeared in the First Class as an adult as the White Queen of the Hellfire club which wasn’t wrong but misplaced.
3) Beast/Hank McCoy: In the first X-Men movie Hank McCoy had a cameo appearance when Wolverine was in a bar. On the television show he appeared without the blue fur. In First Class he changed to his blue furry form towards the end of the movie. Now they could easily say that when he appeared in the first X-Men Movie he was wearing a holographic projector similar to the one Nightcrawler uses in the comics.
4) Sebastian Shaw: Him with Magnetos helmet? Unless I have missed something that was something that never happened in the comics. Only Magneto and Juggernaut wore the helmets that shielded them from psychic probing. That was wrong. Shaw’s powers were accurate I liked seeing them on film.
5) Azazel(I don’t care if I spelled his name wrong): Red Teleporting guy. He was created some while ago to be Nightcrawler’s father in the comics. His origin is that the first mutants looked like angels or demons and that is why people thought they had something to do with God. Sketchy…
6) Sean Cassidy/Banshee: Alright in the Comics he was not originally in the first class of recruits (I mentioned them earlier). He along with Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Wolverine, Thunderbird, and Sunfire were later recruited when four of the original X-men were captured. He appeared in the film as a teenager but he was an adult when Xavier found him in the comics.
7) Raven/Mystique: In the comics she came up with her own version of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Her posse of rogues included: Pyro (who joined up with Magneto at the end of X2), Avalanche, The Blob (who was in Wolverine X-Men Origins, and Destiny. In the film she was some friend like sister of Xavier and in the first class of recruits this was wrong. Shaking my head!
8) Xavier being crippled. This annoyed me now that I am writing it. In the beginning of X-men 3, Magneto (older and graying) and Xavier (bald and WALKING) appear at the home of Jean Grey and recruit her. At the end of X-Men first class, Xavier was wounded by Magneto as he was deflecting bullets shot by Moira. The wounds left him unable to walk. In the Ultimate X-men comics Xavier was wounded by Magneto, but in the original story an Alien named Lucifer caused Xavier’s paralysis when he dropped a massive stone block on him. In first class he was paralyzed and with his hair and at the hands of Magneto.
There were errors in the original trilogy and in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. If they wanted to use other mutants that would have been fine if they had decided to use the original five or come up with new mutants that were under the original instruction of the duo of Xavier and Magneto before they went their separate ways. In the latest film they did come up with two mutants. I won’t reveal it. Real talk, I enjoyed the movie because I went in knowing they had things wrong. It was good. My favorite part was the Wolverine Cameo. If you want to see go ahead and see it you will enjoy it. Maybe?
Here is a quote: “The only man who never makes a mistake is the man who never does anything.”-Theodore Roosevelt. Honestly, I’m not trying to be that overly anal fan. Those involved are doing things as far as being in the industry and doing what they love. Something I’m noticing a lot is people are willing to make sacrifices if they can make a quick buck. As a writer I don’t want to cut corners and mess up stories. X-Men first class is not a bad movie, I’m not saying it was just one big mistake either. The quote is more for me, as I’m working on my screenplay I’m hesitant in my writing because I don’t like making mistakes and I have already started my script over. Mistakes are necessary we all make them. They are better dealt with when we admit to them. So in whatever you do, don’t be afraid to make mistakes (even if someone will have the audacity to make a blog about it!). It’s cool because you’re the one doing something! Take care have a great day! woRm.
